Testimony presented by Commissioner David Wright, Vice-Chairman, South Carolina Public Service Commission and Chairman of the Nuclear Waste Strategy Coalition, before the Blue Ribbon Commission Transportation and Storage Subcommittee during the August 19, 2010 meeting in Washington, D.C., pointed out that by the way of the 1982 Nuclear Waste Policy Act,
(NWPA) as amended, the federal government became responsible for taking title to and disposing of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste from decommissioned and operating plant sites. Commissioner Wright also advocated and believes that if the license application currently under review by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is allowed to proceed, it will show that the Yucca Mountain site will meet the scientific and technological requirements of the
NWPA. August 19,2010

The State of Maine Governor's Office advocated during its presentation to the Blue Ribbon Commission Transportation and Storage Subcommittee during the August 10 meeting in Wiscasset, ME, that good economic, national security and energy policy warrants the removal of spent nuclear fuel
(SNF) from decommissioned plant sites. Mr. John Kerry, Director, Governor's Office of Energy and Independence and Security, further stated that the funds paid by the nation's ratepayers into the Nuclear Waste Fund should be used for their intended purpose - to remove SNF from plant sites. NWSC
letter to the BRC Transportation and Storage Subcommittee with
regards to the August 10, 2010 meeting in Wiscasset, ME. The
NWSC urges the BRC to make recommendations to the federal
government to develop a plan to move and temporarily store spent
nuclear fuel that is currently stranded at decommissioned reactor
sites and operating reactor site(s) for consolidation at locations
that volunteer to host SNF and HLRW storage facilities.
However, the NWSC points out that a centralized interim storage is
not a substitute for a permanent repository and should be
considered as a short-term solution only. July 28, 2010.
